Porthleven by Cornish Artist, Holly Cecilia Smith | Cornwall Landscape Painting
Painted outside on location, this contemporary Porthleven art print captures the harbour and its iconic clock tower using expressive colour, broad brushstrokes and delicate pencil drawing.
The curve of the harbour leads your eye through the painting towards the sea, while the tall clock tower creates a strong vertical focal point. Deep burgundy and plum give shape to the harbour walls, contrasting beautifully with clear turquoise water and a softly painted sky in pale blue, blush pink and warm cream.
One of our favourite details is the lightly drawn house on the right-hand side. Its fine pencil lines sit against the generous painted shapes, giving the artwork an informal, immediate quality. It feels as though Holly is allowing us to see part of her process as she responds to the harbour in front of her.
Painted outdoors in Porthleven, the original captures a fleeting moment of light and atmosphere at this much-loved Cornish harbour. The clock tower makes the view instantly recognisable, while Holly’s expressive interpretation leaves space for your own memories of the place.
We particularly love this artwork above a sideboard in a dining room, where its wide composition and unusual details can be properly appreciated. The pale sky and water sit easily with neutral interiors, while the deeper burgundy shapes add warmth and definition.
MEET THE ARTIST
Holly Cecilia Smith is a Cornwall-based painter inspired by time spent outdoors, immersed in the changing landscapes of the Cornish coast.
Painting directly on location allows Holly to respond to fleeting moments of light, weather and movement as they happen. Using confident, expressive brushwork, she captures the atmosphere of a place rather than simply recording the view, giving each painting an immediacy that would be difficult to recreate from a photograph in the studio.
Swimming, walking and exploring Cornwall’s coastline are central to Holly’s creative process. This close connection to the landscape brings an authentic sense of place to her work, creating paintings that will resonate with anyone who feels drawn to the sea.
