Painted outside on location, this beautiful Porthtowan art print captures the changing light over the cliffs and sea at one of Cornwall’s best-loved beaches.
Holly Smith created the original painting while immersed in the landscape, responding to the colours, movement and atmosphere in front of her.
We love the deep plum and aubergine tones across the cliffs, which meet layers of sea green, turquoise and soft grey. Touches of peach and sand add warmth to the shoreline, while broad, textured brushstrokes give the sky and water a wonderful sense of movement.
Rather than recording every detail, Holly has captured the feeling of standing above the shore as the light shifts across the coast. The result sits beautifully between observation and abstraction: recognisably Cornish, but with enough space to recall your own memories of days spent beside the sea.
One of our favourite things about this painting is the balance between its darker, dramatic headland and softer coastal colours.
We particularly love this piece above a bed, where its wide composition and calming palette have room to breathe. It would also look beautiful in a living room, especially alongside warm woods, soft neutrals and natural textures.

Holly Cecilia Smith is a Cornwall-based painter inspired by time spent outdoors, immersed in the changing landscapes of the Cornish coast.
Painting directly on location allows Holly to respond to fleeting moments of light, weather and movement as they happen.
Using confident, expressive brushwork, she captures the atmosphere of a place rather than simply recording the view, giving each painting an immediacy that would be difficult to recreate in a studio.
